The latest news on Discovery Hostel and Rio de Janeiro
As discoverers of the world, we firmly believe in preserving it for all who love to travel! Here are a few ways we have contributed in the house using recycled and reused materials to create furniture and art. Not only was it fun to create but the results make our house truly a home.
For the snack stand, we found on the side of the road this small wooden frame with baskets was stripped down and given a new life. We fixed up the structure, gave it a new coat of pain then added a tall base and lets (the legs were recycled from an old bed). The base was left over wood from another project in the house and contains storage space in the back. We also used left over planks to create a rustic finish that would match the house. For the signage, we painted decorative pieces of wood with chalkboard paint so they can be used over and over again. Delicious!
For the book stand we used old door frames taken from a renovation of the house and created this one of a kind piece. The results are a simple yet functional book shelf that houses our games and coffee table books.
An old broken ladder is now our book exchange and old thrown out frames become colorful works of art. We are totally into transforming one item into a different purpose - extending its usability. And we love the idea of blackboards; the look, the feel and the fact that they cut down on wasted paper. Creative and eclectic!
Since the house is decades old, we were fortunate to find amazing items lying about that we reused throughout the house as decoration. In every corner you can find a piece of history. Old books about language and exploration can be found in our library. Old lanterns and trays add a subtle touch of what once was. Perhaps you'll discovery something new (or old) when you visit!
Nothing goes to waste - not even old floor boards ripped out that appear to be rotted through and useless. We reassemble the floor into an amazing artistic centerpiece. We hand painted the flag of Brazil on these aged floor boards that now hangs prominently in our main hallway.
Thanks for taking a look and we hope you enjoyed!
